CUSIP Improvements requested by MunicipalBonds.com
MunicipalBonds.com announces today it has made contact and has had
discussions with the CUSIP Board of Trustees requesting that CUSIP
identification details and procedures as they pertain to Municipal Bonds
be fine tuned for the benefit of Municipal Bond investors.
There has been much discussion in the Municipal Bond industry on where to
place or how to use CUSIP numbers. MunicipalBonds.com supports these
efforts, but suggests that a fundamental improvement of the CUSIP
identifier, as it pertains to Municipal Bonds, has always been and is
still very necessary.
In addition to an overall study and review, MunicipalBonds.com has
submitted two specific ideas to the CUSIP Board of Trustees:
1) In order to specifically identify a Municipal Bond, include and
pre-attach the widely-known and accepted two-letter State identifier as
part of the CUSIP character.
Clearly, because of both taxation and investment strategies, the
identification needs for Municipal Bonds investors fundamentally begin
with what State of boundry the Issuer exists. We need to make things
easier for the investor. The inclusion of the generally accepted two
letter State identifiers would make the CUSIP and isssue immediately and
categorically identifiable.
Note: Issuers within two or more State boundaries can be handled with new
but similar State/State two-letter identifiers.
2) With the State of origin clarified, it is next critical that
description standards be set and or radically improved.
MunicipalBonds.com has offered ideas and is happy to work with the CUSIP
Board of Trustees on how to improve the listed/abbreviated descriptions of
Municipal Bonds.
MunicipalBonds.com provides advocacy and representation for Municipal Bond
investors by developing the primary goals of "fair disclosure" of
Municipal Bond and Issuer continuing information, as well as the
introducing and developing the idea of "fair pricing" in the Municipal
Bond markets.
